Description
This Monday, May 23rd, the Board of Aldermen of New Haven will vote on the City’s FY ‘11/12 budget.
As part of the proposed budget they are expecting $5.7 million in meter revenue, of which $1.5 million will come from extending the meter times into the evening from 7 p.m. to midnight. After 5 p.m. there would be no time restriction.
For example, if you park at 5:30 p.m. and “feed the meter” or if you don’t want to run out every hour you can pay up front (put in $3 for two hours, $6 for 4 hours, etc). This will only be done where new meters are placed (as they will allow you to pre pay). The City of New Haven plans to have them in place in most of downtown by the end of summer.
Currently, they are only on part of Chapel Street. Additionally, the City would look into ways to help residents who park downtown as well as provide a “grace period” when the program is first initiated.
The Town Green Board of Commissioners has voted to write a letter to the Aldermen against this proposal. If you are also opposed to this proposal, call and email the aldermen.

The positive from this may be more street presence by ticket people out at night- but the negatives include- more bothed up over and mis giving of tickets and the fact that not all meters are 2 hour and not all will be equitably monitored - infact some areas will be targeted more.
So lets see how business and residences who need parking handle this one....
