Description
This brick sidewalk is in need of serious repair. Various utility repairs have taken out bricks. Trees are lifting the brick. I cannot imagine attempting it in a wheelchair. In the dark it is starting to seem unsafe to walk down in low heels. Historic is nice, but safe and accessible is necessary.

Thanks for raising this concern. My office has been pushing the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) to address this substandard sidewalk. I'm pleased to report that DDOT will be widening this sidewalk substantially when they rebuild U Street (currently scheduled for late-2011).
You can view the proposed design here: http://www.ustreetnwupgrade.com/
I am advised that DDOT will be hosting a public meeting on this project within the coming two months.
Bests, CM Jim Graham
